Disciples of Christ

 

"It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher ..." Jesus says to his own. Jesus invites us to be part of his team. In our discipleship there is only one Master, Jesus Christ, in whom and through whom the same Father is present among us, alive and real.

Jesus the Teacher teaches us. We listen to understand, and everything in coherence with the commitment that we have assumed of absolute obedience to Him whom we seek: the all-loving Father. Our search is nothing other than the encounter with Jesus Christ, body to body, participation in his way of being, identification of our way of being with his life, his person and his Gospel.

This strong conviction led to a viral movement around the world. Before there were social networks, the internet, cars and planes; Jesus' disciples spread over almost the entire face of the Earth. Just as a chayotera spreads and covers the entire pasture, a global movement spreads that love of neighbor (a sign that we are disciples of Christ), cares for the Earth that God inherited from us.

What the disciple learns is the life of Jesus himself, the perfect obedient to the Father's will. With whom he was talking retired in nature or in the middle of the squares. Father and son in a perfect love relationship. So that we have an example and follow in their footsteps.

The disciple of Jesus develops his/her life project centered on Jesus and his following. Applying the gospel in life, renewed conversion. They are dedicated to the personal and community study of the sacred scriptures. He lets himself be guided by the Holy Spirit to be a witness of Jesus in all areas of life.

The Father from the beginning chose a people, a community, to carry out his works. The Bible tells us how she made communities of plants, animals and humans. And it gave us the privilege of caring for and cultivating the land. The Father formed a people, whom he would guide, care for. The Father procured a land for his people, through Moses demonstrated a powerful arm and led them to the land that he prepared for them. Through the prophets, God insisted that his people turn to him.

Then his Son came, and from such a stick such a splinter: following the Father's example, he came to form a community of disciples. Jesus came to establish a new people. A town that, at first, was only a small group, as small as a mustard seed. And the Almighty Father has a plan for Jesus' disciples: "Do not fear, little flock, because your Father has thought it good to give you the Kingdom" (Lk 12,32). And this group was called to integrate all of humanity.

Jesus thinks of a community of disciples. Jesus himself called one of his disciples and invited them to follow him, to live, eat and walk with the rest of the disciples so that a bond was formed between them. That bond remained after Jesus ascended into heaven and enabled the nascent church to be given strength and vitality. They prayed a lot, shared things, and worked for the Kingdom that Jesus had started. This challenge would give new meaning to their entire existence.

The Master Jesus shows them in practical life the application of the values ​​of the kingdom of God and his divine justice. He formed a family united and moved by the Holy Spirit. Men and women of different social and economic realities. It breaks the barrier that separated the Greco-Roman and Jewish cultures. Break the barrier of hatred.

It was not easy for the disciples, nor were they without problems. There were crises among them, many times they did not understand Jesus, many of them left the group; Judas betrayed him, Peter denied him, others fled and abandoned him. But Jesus never stopped loving them, he felt identified with them, as if they were an extension of him. However, Jesus instructed them to remain united with him and united with one another. He compared himself to the vine, then Paul compared him to the body and its limbs. Through coexistence in community you learn to live like the Master. 

Jesus was clear that there should be a change in our priorities

“If anyone wants to come after me, let him renounce himself, carry his cross and follow me. Because whoever wants to save his life will lose it; butloses his life for me will save itwhoever”(Mt 16,24-25).

"Go, sell everything you have and give it to the poor ... Then come and follow me" (Mk 10,21);

"If anyone wants to come with me and is not willing to give up his father and mother, his wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even himself, he cannot be my disciple" (Lk 14,26);

"He who lays his hand on the plow and looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God" (Lk 9,62).

That does not mean being irresponsible with the family. If the commandment that he gives us is to love our neighbor as oneself, then in the previous quotations Jesus speaks of selfishness and of the conditioned love that other people give me back. Jesus loves us without expecting anything in return. Jesus died on the cross and shed his blood for the forgiveness of our sins, expecting nothing from us. He reconciled all of us to God, adopted us as children of God, and gave us citizenship in the Kingdom of God.

Jesus chose twelve of his disciples to be the foundations that support the human edifice that is the Church that is the community in which the Kingdom of God is visible, touchable. Through the Church the Kingdom of God that unites men and women with one another is made known and begins to be built.

Jesus chose women and men who take the trouble to love others. If we consider Pharisees and prostitutes to be just as sinful, why does he save the prostitute and scold the Pharisees?

He sent his disciples to preach the Kingdom of God, as Jesus did. They modeled His behaviors, His attitudes and His thoughts at the towns he was going to visit. That is why he lived with sinners, tax collectors and with the outcasts of society and with his disciples, so they could learn from him. To follow in his footsteps.

Who are today’s outcasts that are rejected even from churches? Should we look for those that are lost and bring them back? Today we have that challenge too, the Holy Spirit inspires us and guides us through the sacred scriptures to know His life, works and teachings. Today the disciple makes Christ present in the midst of our reality. Because discipleship is a service to the Lord and in the presence of the Lord; the disciples are servants only for what Christ wants and how Christ wants it.

In deep prayer, the Holy Spirit reminds us that hope helps us recognize that there is always a solution, that it can be changed to be better and better each time. We can have the certainty and the guarantee that we can always do something to make the Kingdom of Love possible in our midst ... as Jesus Christ did and all his followers do who build and repair their house every day.

Jesus took the trouble to love those who were close to him; and thus, to bear witness to how the Father's love works. This is how his disciples should act. He took the trouble to transmute water into wine. That we love our neighbor so much that we go looking for it as the lost sheep. Loving God so much to have spare oil for the lamps in case the bridegroom is late. Or take the trouble to prepare a fish for when we get tired of our day. 

Discipulos de Cristo

“Al discípulo le basta ser como su maestro...” Dice Jesús a los suyos. Jesús nos invita a ser parte de su equipo. En nuestro discipulado hay un solo Maestro, Jesucristo, en el cual y a través del cual está presente entre nosotros, vivo y real, el mismo Padre.

Jesús, el Maestro, nos enseña. Escuchamos para comprender, y todo en coherencia con el compromiso que hemos asumido de obediencia absoluta a Aquel a quien buscamos: El Padre todocariñoso. Nuestra búsqueda no es otra cosa que el encuentro con Jesucristo, cuerpo a cuerpo, participación en su modo de ser, identificación de nuestro modo de ser con su vida, su persona y su Evangelio.

Esta fuerte convicción llevó a un movimiento viral alrededor de todo el mundo. Antes que hubieran redes sociales, internet, automóviles y aviones; los discípulos de Jesús se extendieron por casi toda la faz de la Tierra. Así como se extiende una chayotera y cubre todo el potrero, se extendió un movimiento global que amor al prójimo (signo de que somos discípulos de Cristo), cuida la Tierra que Dios nos heredó.

Lo que el discípulo aprende es la vida misma de Jesús, el perfecto obediente a la voluntad del Padre. Con quien conversaba retirado en la naturaleza o en medio de las plazas. Padre e hijo en una relación perfecta de amor. Para que nosotros tengamos un ejemplo y sigamos sus huellas.

El discípulo de Jesús desarrolla su proyecto de vida centrado en Jesús y en su seguimiento. Aplicando el evangelio en la vida, conversión renovada. Se dedican al estudio personal y comunitario de las sagradas escrituras. Se deja guiar por el Espíritu Santo a ser testigo de Jesús en todos los ámbitos de la vida.

El Padre desde el principio escogió a un pueblo, a una comunidad, para llevar a cabo sus obras. La Bilbia nos cuenta como hizo comunidades de plantas, animales y humanos. Y nos dio el privilegio de cuidar y cultivar la tierra. El Padre formó un pueblo, a quien guiaría, cuidaría. El Padre procuró una tierra para su pueblo, por medio de Moisés demostró brazo poderoso y los llevó a la tierra que el les preparó. Por medio de los profetas, Dios insistía a que su pueblo se volviera a él.

Luego vino su Hijo, y de tal palo tal astilla: siguiendo el ejemplo del Padre, vino a formar una comunidad de discípulos. Jesús vino a establecer un pueblo nuevo. Un pueblo que, al principio, fue sólo un grupo reducido, tan pequeño como una semilla de mostaza. Y el Padre todo poderoso tiene un plan para los discípulos de Jesús.: «No temas, pequeño rebaño, porque a vuestro Padre le ha parecido bien daros a vosotros el Reino» (Lc 12,32). Y este grupo estaba llamado a integrar a toda la humanidad.

Jesús piensa en una comunidad de discípulos. Jesús mismo fue llamando uno a uno de sus discípulos y los invitó a seguirlo, a convivir, comer y a caminar con el resto de los discípulos de modo que se formara vínculo entre ellos. Ese vínculo permaneció después de que Jesús subió a los cielos y permitió darle fuerza y vitalidad a la iglesia naciente. Oraban mucho, compartían las cosas y trabajaban por el Reino que Jesús había empezado. Este reto daría nuevo sentido a toda su existencia.

El Maestro Jesús les muestra en la vida práctica la aplicación de los valores del reino de Dios y su justicia divina. Formó una familia unida y movida por el Espíritu Santo. Hombres y mujeres de distintas realidades sociales y económicas. Rompe la barrera que separaba las culturas grecorromana y judía. Rompe la barrera del odio.

No les fue fácil a los discípulos, ni estuvieron exentos de problemas. Hubo crisis entre ellos, muchas veces no entendían a Jesús, muchos de ellos abandonaron el grupo; Judas lo traicionó, Pedro lo negó, otros huyeron y lo abandonaron. Pero Jesús nunca los dejó de amar, se sentía identificado con ellos, como si fueran una extensión de él. Sin embargo, Jesús les instruyó a que permanecieran unidos a él y unidos entre sí. Él se comparó con la vid, luego Pablo lo compara con el cuerpo y sus miembros. Por medio de la convivencia en comunidad se aprende a vivir como el Maestro. 

Jesús fue claro que debía haber un cambio en nuestras prioridades

«Si alguno quiere venir detrás de mí, que renuncie a sí mismo, cargue con su cruz y me siga. Porque el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; pero el que pierda su vida por mí, la salvará» (Mt 16,24-25).

«Vete, vende todo lo que tienes y dalo a los pobres… Luego ven y sígueme» (Mc 10,21);

«Si alguno quiere venir conmigo y no está dispuesto a renunciar a su padre y a su madre, a su mujer y a sus hijos, hermanos y hermanas, e incluso a sí mismo, no puede ser discípulo mío» (Lc 14,26);

«El que pone la mano en el arado y mira hacia atrás, no es apto para el Reino de Dios» (Lc 9,62).

Eso no significa ser irresponsable con la familia. Si el mandamiento que él nos da es amar al prójimo como a uno mismo, entonces en las citas anteriores Jesús habla del egoísmo y del amor condicionado a que las otras personas me devuelva. Jesús nos ama sin esperar nada a cambio. Jesús murió en la cruz y derramó su sangre para el perdón de nuestros pecados, sin esperar nada de nosotros. Él reconcilió a todos con Dios, nos adoptó como hijos de Dios y nos dio la ciudadanía en el Reino de Dios.

Jesús escogió a doce de sus discípulos para ser los cimientos que sostienen el edificio humano que es la Iglesia que es la comunidad en la que el Reino de Dios se hace palpable. A través de la Iglesia se da a conocer y comienza a edificarse el Reino de Dios que une a los hombres entre sí.

Jesús escogió a las mujeres y a los hombres que se toman la molestia de amar a los demás. Si consideramos que fariseos y prostitutas son igual de pecadores, ¿Por qué  salva a la prostituta y regaña a los fariseos?

El envió a sus discípulos a predicar el Reino de Dios, como la hacía Jesús. Modelaron sus comportamientos, sus actitudes y sus pensamientos ante los pueblos que iban visitando. Por eso convivía con los pecadores, cobradores de impuestos y con los rechazados de la sociedad y con sus discípulos, para que aprendieran de él. Para que sigan sus huellas.

Hoy nosotros tenemos ese reto también, el Espíritu Santo nos inspira y nos guía a través de las sagradas escrituras a conocer su vida, obras y enseñanzas. Hoy día el discípulo hace presente a Cristo en medio de su realidad. Porque el discipulado es un servicio al Señor y en presencia del Señor; es servidor únicamente para lo que quiere Cristo y como lo quiere Cristo.

En profunda oración, el Espíritu Santo nos recuerda que la esperanza nos ayuda a reconocer que siempre hay una solución, que sí se puede cambiar para ser mejores y mejores cada vez. Podemos tener la certeza y la garantía que siempre podemos hacer algo para que el Reino del Amor sea posible en medio de nosotros...como lo hizo Jesucristo y lo hacen todos sus seguidores que construimos y reparamos su casa todos los días.

Jesús se tomó la molestia de amar a los que estaban cerca de él; y así, a dar testimonio de cómo opera el amor del Padre. Así es como sus discípulos debemos actuar. Se tomó la molestia de transmutar el agua en vino. Que amemos tanto al prójimo que lo vayamos a buscar como a la oveja perdida. Amar tanto a Dios para tener aceite de repuesto para las lámparas por si el novio se demora. O tomarse la molestia de prepararnos un pescado para cuando lleguemos cansados de nuestra jornada.
